Giuseppe Di Stefano

Born in Giarratana (RG) and based in Rome.

A professional journalist since 1988, registered with the National Order of Journalists of Rome.

From February 2018 to December 2021, he served as a representative of the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) on the Dance Advisory Committee.

A dance and theatre critic, stage photographer, and photojournalist, he currently writes for the bimonthly magazine Danza&Danza (print and web), the online magazines Exibart.com and Sipario.it, and the monthly magazine Città Nuova (print and web).
From 2006 to 2015, he collaborated with Ilsole24ore.com (Culture/Entertainment section). He has also contributed to Artribune.com, the theatre and performing arts monthly Primafila (reviews and interviews with leading figures in theatre, dance, and cinema), Teatro.org, and the weeklies Carta and Il nostro tempo. He has written programme notes for the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the Teatro Comunale di Ferrara, Aterballetto (Reggio Emilia), ArtemisDanza (Parma), and others. 

In February 2020, he received the Europa in Danza Award with the citation: “Merit Award for his work as a theatre and dance critic, journalist, and dance and theatre photographer.” In December 2025, he received the DAS – Danza Arte e Spettacolo Award for his activity as a dance critic, during the Gala Eccellenze della Danza 2025 in Ercolano. 

As a photographer, he has exhibited in both group and solo shows in Rome and other Italian cities. Notable solo exhibitions include: Movimenti di danza (November 2005, Teatro Eliseo, Rome), large-format photographs of Italian and international dance companies; Cinque anni di RHHP (September 2007, Teatro Ambra Jovinelli, Rome), presented as part of the sixth edition of the RHHP festival dedicated to hip-hop dance, curated by journalist and dance critic Vittoria Ottolenghi; and L’occhio complice – Il teatro di Emma Dante (May 2006, Teatro Palladium, Rome), featuring stage photographs, rehearsals, and workshop images from productions by the Sicilian director, on the occasion of a showcase dedicated to her by the Romaeuropa Festival. The same exhibition accompanied the debut of Cani di bancata at the Palermo Festival, and he was presented at CRT Teatro dell’Arte in Milan, Teatro Palladium in Rome, and Teatro Mercadante in Naples, with a reprise in 2008 at Teatro Valle in Rome as part of a month-long retrospective devoted to the Sicilian director. This was followed, in 2011, by the publication of a book by Infinito Edizioni: Il teatro di Emma Dante nelle foto di Giuseppe Distefano

In November 2020, as part of the international festival La Strada in Brescia—organized by Milan’s CLAPS circuit to mark the tenth anniversary of choreographer Pina Bausch (Tanztheater Wuppertal)—he presented the photographic exhibition Trittico Pina Bausch at Spazio Bunker – Rifugio Vittorio Arrigoni. The exhibition was later shown in Catania (October 2022) in the foyer of Teatro Massimo Bellini, and in additional venues within the “W” season of Scenario Pubblico / Compagnia Zappalà Danza, before reaching Palermo in September 2023 for the multidisciplinary festival Metamorphosis.
